National Championship Preview

National Championship 2018 Preview.

We move over to Ipswich for our next major title race and the National Championship event.
All drivers entered must have done a minimum of two race meetings prior in this season in order to qualify.
Last years winner 45 Craig Boyd will not be defending the title , also 8 Darren Owen recent winner of the English open will not be there.
Needless to say the grid will not be short of quality drivers nor will it be short of the finest retro race cars you will find anywhere.
The whole weekend is full of oval motor sport and starts on the Saturday with practice and lap timings for grid positions for the National hot rods.
All details of the event and a chance to buy tickets on lie can be found on the Spedeworth website.
From Scotland we have 17 Kenny Purdie #thekingofcrossflows , the man who sat with 8 #deadlydaz fro 25 of the hottest laps a few weeks ago at Hednesford . If he can get either of the pole positions he may be the man to set the pace.
He is joined by 58 Alex Wilson who had a few running issues last time out in the ex Mcfastlane chuvitt lets hope he has put them to bed and has a cracking day.
871 Graeme Callendar completes the travelling trio , he was on the pace at Hednesford in heat 2 but a non finish in heat 1 put him down the grid maybe this Saturday will see him shine.
From Wales we have the one and only 57 #thewelshwizzard Mike Oliver in the Talbot , which has had a colour change for this Saturday to a more traditional scheme for a Welsh Man. When Mike gets on the pace he is rarely catchable and we have seen some great victories from him . He was on the podium in second place back in 2015 lets see him up there this year.

Just two contenders from Ireland for this years race and we have see in recent days via facebook both have been busy in preparation .
19 Anthony Morgan #captainmorgan, mk2 Escort has been taking quite a few victories so far this year over the water . The car itself looks splendid and on the pace the extra preparation could well pay off.
25 Trevor Cussack is also ready to go racing and will be looking for a good qualifying position on the main grid in a chance of a podium position.

Now the English grid ! Where do we start ? My word the finest cars and some rather interesting stars , both of today and yesteryear .
Lets start with our own Penelope pitstop #littlemissBoydy 44 Kara , the engine has been out of the Riley for a rebuild , she has the guts and determination equal to any of the other drivers . Maybe she can get past the boys and take the championship , who knows? It would be splendid to see her up there on podium number one.
No doubt 445 #thecowboy my old mate with good inside weight Graham Boyd will peddle the old A40 a little harder this year ? No doubt what ever he will be in the mix of things to come.
924 Stuart Wright will be in the mk1 Escort has raced by Dad Roger in previous years , there had been a few running issues had Hednesford . No doubt that engine has been apart and put back together in detail these last few weeks. The angle box did Stuart proud will a change to the Escort see him on the podium?
42 Dean Kitchen #thebromleybomber lost power had Hednesford recently with a blown head gasket lets hope the car is in good shape and ready for the big race.
236 Ryan Polley #rhino will be on board the second A40 from Boyd’s stock of tough little cars , the youngster can certainly drive . Staying out of trouble at Ipswich is the main thing and a good grid position . Given he may have Craig s car this years race might have just got a little more interesting.
Sporting his union jack roof in a car he bought for £££ many moons ago from the planet ford will be #jayjay 271 Jamie Johnson , often terming himself has the oldest rodder on the grid. A unknown quantity , we have seen him up there amongst the top three many times here at Ipswich , fingers crossed this year then.
Well we are not even half way through the English group , it is only Monday today the weather still scorching and apparently we have four more weeks of this. Lets hope that hasn’t changed by Saturday ! Michael Fish got the weather wrong once and never forgot it !
Next up then 116 #alpachaman Adrian Taber , the angle box looks cool in the gulf colours . Recent Hednesford was a up and down day dropping back down the pack quickly so who knows everyone has good days .
257 #pockectrocket Andrew Willis , now the little Austin can get a shift on when she wants and fits in small gaps . No doubt Andrew will give the old girl all she’s got .
210 #musicman Hughie Weaver , will have no doubt been through every nut , bolt and polished the mk1 up ready for the big day . Rubbing the wax on ready to rub and race the day away . Hughie can certainly ride a long on your door handles and then leave you for dust . If the car is in tune and the driver gets on song ! watch out the #musicman is coming through !
198 #donut Andy Steward what hasn’t been said about this man , we all know he will drive the nuts of that Mk2 in a race sponsored by the builder SHP. Already taking the Scottish open and the Fife Open in Scotland this year , this man collects titles like some collect parking tickets .
555 Gavin Taber #thevanman gave a good defence of his English title , the car had just the engine rebuilt . It should be run in enough now to get Gavin on the pace and up amongst the fore runners.
72 #thenorfolkboy Gary Goodswin , the metallic red mk2 escort always looks to be on form . He took the first heat at Hednesford with a flying start but had to battle with 198 #donut for the win.
In his own backyard and local fans cheering him on will give him the boost every driver needs , it accelerates the adrenalin and the car no doubt will be flying.
121 #italianstallion Charlie Schrembri , the car was immaculately turned out for the English and was on a reasonable level of pace . A few more horses out of her could see Charlie up there challenging for a top three.
976 Clive Richardson winner of the big race back in 2016 will be looking for another outside pole position that took him to that victory.
151 Paul Hollis #hotrodhollis will be one of many Angle box drivers attending on Saturday , the car sporting a pinto will enjoy the large oval of Ipswich . A Good grid position will give Paul a reasonable finish to the day.
27 Dave York #duke , this Dave’s first season with the classic hot rod and I must say he could well be one to watch Saturday he was well on pace at Hednesford .
333 #theprinceofpop Lee Wood , on podium no1 back in 2015 . a few transitions on the Viva since and the old girl is still very much on pace . Gaffer tape in one hand and a bill for spare front wings in the other Lee will no doubt give it the best shot he can.
Last but not least then Mr Classic Hot rod himself , he’s been in them longer than I can remember . He’s out seen his opposition Rick Fray and many more ! A few Mk1 Escorts , Mk2 Escort , Talbot and now the old ford my lord 100e ! infract he’s outlasted his cars . Yes indeed its 20 #thesilverfox Dave Fry . We can only expect his best all night from Dave , he certainly wont be short on trying for the win.
Well race fans that’s the run down , I don’t think we are expecting any late comers .
There will be two heats and a final under championship rules gridded . May the best man or woman take victory .
I will be around with a few FREE keyrings with me , spot me grab one and lets talk rods.
See you all Saturday ROD ON Andy Hankin.
