Mildenhall Preview

English round 5 – Shale Shifters Championship – Mildenhall 26th may

Classic hot rods will take to the short oval shale track of Mildenhall in Suffolk , renown for saloon stock car action and “the Mecca “of banger tracks.
Currently 10 cars are booked into race .
8 Deadly Daz Owen mk2 escort ; previous banger racer has raced the track in the past. Also Chase Car Spares are sponsoring the classics for the meeting trophies.
445 The Cow boy , Graham Boyd ; ford powered Austin a40 ; last raced there in the eighties in saloon stock cars.
45 Craig Boyd , Austin A40 ; ford powered ;notched many wins on tarmac will the shale prove any different for him.
72 Gary Goodswin , mk2 Escort Local driver to east Anglia .
198 Andy Steward , mk2 Escort , current points leader and multi champion.
57 Mike Oliver , Talbot sunbeam ford powered , the welsh wizard is getting excited for the shale.
271 Jamie Johnson , mk1 Escort , always smartly turned out . The owner of a retro ford parts supply company.
210 Hughie Weaver , Mk1 Escort , has performed well on tarmac taking a few titles will the shale suit him ?
257 Andrew Willis , Austin a35 , the pocket rocket . Light short wheel base car should fly around the mildenhall short oval.
333 Lee Wood is provisional at this stage , the Vive la Viva may appear depending on how Lee’s house moving goes.
Still to be confirmed Dave Murphy , Paul hollis and there’s a car almost finished up in Scotland that may make the trip ( I have pointed out cider is cheaper down here ! ).
There is no pre forecast for the shale shifter supreme title , it could go anyway . The shale may prove a issue for one or two , a dry night would be to the benefit of the faster cars ; a wet night to those with previous experience of the loose surface.
The second part of the equation will be down to set up , the track will require differential gear changes and possibly gearbox changes .
Mildenhal is one of the shorter shale tracks , Dave Coventry has assured us that track preparation will be firm with sparse watering to help the cars get grip . Deane Wood of Spedeworth has permitted the drivers to use old slicks and wet tyres ( with the rules and regs) in order to assist the drivers if the night becomes a wet one.
Andy watts , will be the commentator for the night . He has worked with the classics a few times . I will be making the trip to the fens to record notes etc for the page and website .
We will run a driver of the day poll and we want to see all those selfies with your favourite drivers .
On another note the Spedeworth team will be busy preparing its second shale surfaced track , Northampton will be shale for a period of the year (including brisca f1 European ) . A venture we hope will be successful and add a new aspect to the whole race scene.
See you there
Andy Hankin Chr PR ….plus me wee side kick Jock McFastlane will be around .
